Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart has proven to be one of the most important people throughout American history. Even though she came from a poor background, a chaotic childhood, and was moving constantly, Amelia Earhart managed to become one of the most important women in American history. She achieved her fame by expanding the boundaries set for women through her achievements, particularly flying across the Atlantic Ocean. Not only was she a well-known aviator, but she was an instant celebrity and women considered her a women’s aviator spokesperson. Amelia Earhart crossed many boundaries that society set for women and by overcoming the obstacles from her childhood she left a mark in history.
Amelia Earhart had a chaotic childhood that definitely affected her future as an aviator. Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. With a chaotic childhood, Earhart had attended six high schools because her father had to move much because of his job as a claims attorney for a railroad. She spent a portion of her childhood with her grandparents because of financial problems at home. Finally after high school, Amelia decided to become a nurse’s aide in Canada because she was deeply affected by the numerous amounts of harmed soldiers. Afterwards she became a student at Columbia University located in New York, only staying one year. As a child though, Earhart was never interested in flying, until she rode an airplane as an adult. This inspired her to become an aviator and later make her well known achievements. Later she married George P. Putnam, the same man who interviewed her for her flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, knowing all of this, Earhart’s life truly did inspire her to achieve those goals that she is known for today.
It may be possible that Earhart’s childhood helped her with achievements later in life. One of her most important achievements was her flight across the Atlantic Ocean, leading her to earning the Distinguished Flying Cross later. Earhart was interviewed by George P. Putnam, a publicist and was later sent on a flight across the Atlantic, but eventually was forced to land in Newfoundland and start again because there was too much fog. Later, Amelia and her male pilot finally did fly across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in Wales with her pilot drunk. Another one of Amelia’s well known achievements was her solo transatlantic flight in 1932. Earhart decided to do this because she felt she did not deserve the fame she was given before as a passenger. It took Amelia fourteen hours and fifty six minutes to land in Ireland later and received worldwide attention.
Earhart’s accomplishments not only gave her a spot in history, but it made her an instant worldwide celebrity. After coming back to the United States she was considered a women’s activist. She gave speeches while George P. Putnam managed her. Not only did she give speeches, but she had a clothing and luggage line of her own. Earhart would also endorse products, making a profit of her own. Most of Amelia Earhart’s fame came from her mysterious death while trying to be the first women to ever fly around the world with navigator Fredrick J. Noonan. When she went missing, there was a great naval search to try to find her. When they couldn’t people made theories on why she went missing. Some say that she was killed by the Japanese. Others say she and her navigator were captured, imprisoned, and then killed by the Japanese. Though, the most common theory is that they were just lost at sea, but it still does not affect her greatness.
Amelia is now known as one of the most brave, important, and influential people throughout history. With a chaotic childhood, Earhart overcame this difficult obstacle. By making the achievements she made, she enlarged the freedom that was given to women. Because of this, she was made instant celebrity. Amelia Earhart will always be remembered as one of the greatest people in history.
